Thursday Ratings: Rachel Maddow Trounces Sean Hannity By More Than Million Viewers

HomeMediaThursday Ratings: Rachel Maddow Trounces Sean Hannity By More Than Million

Rachel Maddow made it four for four again this week. On Thursday night she once again trounced Sean Hannity at 9pm in the cable news race.

Maddow scored just over 4 million viewers on MSNBC on Thursday, a high for the week and her fourth day in a row of killing it.

Sean Hannity, literally dying on the vine, came in with 2,, viewers. Hannity has literally lost 2 million viewers over the last three or four months.

Hannity more or less tied with Lawrence O&#;Donnell, whose 10pm show on MSNBC had 2,, million. O&#;Donnell&#;s direct Fox News competition, Laura Ingraham, could only find 2,,

This news comes as Fox News has fired Lou Dobbs from Fox Business (I&#;m happy to see David Asman is getting the spot) because of a $ billion lawsuit. Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro could be next since they&#;re also named as defendants.

Overall Fox News ratings are in substantial decline as their main mission &#; to support a corrupt and criminal president &#; has backfired.

This coming week, with coverage of the impeachment trial, Fox should really take a beating vs. CNN and MSNBC.

Fox News Wins Cable News Ratings War, Again; Maddow Tops &#;Hannity&#; In Demo

Maybe it’s all that “executive time” that Donald Trump spends watching, but Fox News Channel is once again having a victory march with its 69th consecutive quarter win in the cable newsers&#; ratings battle.

However, even though the Rupert Murdoch owned outlet was the clear winner in total day, primetime and overall for the month of March, there was a dent in FNC’s armor.

Amidst partisan political roller coasters galore including the conclusion of Robert Mueller’s investigation into seemingly unfounded Trump collusion with Russia in the election, The Rachel Maddow Show delivered a bit of a slap to 9 PM rival Sean Hannity and his nighty offering.

Though MSNBC was in a solid second place in almost all categories, Maddow flipped the results of 1Q&#;18 to draw , viewers on average in the demo for the first quarter of compared to Hannity’s ,

While number #1 to Sean&#;s rare #2 spot over the quarter, it is worth noting that since the March 22 handing over to the DOJ of former FBI Director&#;s nearly page still secret report, Maddow has seen her ratings go down and Trump pal Hannity rebound. According to recently minted Attorney General William Barr, that multi-year investigation was on the fence about obstruction of justice by Trump and found no evidence of collusion despite multiple convictions of associates of the former Celebrity Apprentice host.

Otherwise, with a variety of ups and downs on the whole for FNC, MSNBC and CNN from 1Q’18, it was all Fox all the time in the ratingd.

In the vital and extremely competitive primetime hours, Fox had million sets of eyeballs watching and , in the news demo to MSNC’s million and , and CNN’s million and , among the s. In a lineup of Laura Ingraham, first time March topper Tucker Carlson, and Hannity, that’s actually an indifferent 1% dip from the same quarter last year in total viewers and a 15% decline in the demo. WarnerMedia-owned CNN and Comcast-owned MSNBC were up 7% and 3% respectively in their primetime overall numbers and down 10% and a hard 18% in the news demo.

In that total viewer slot, Hannity was number one in the quarter with million watching to Maddow’s million. With the rest of the top five most watched and highest rated cable news show for the quarter belonging to FNC, not a single CNN program made that top tier cut. Slightly less impressive that than 69 quarters in a row most watched award, FNC is now the highest rated cable newser among the s for the 44th consecutive quarter.

Overall, Fox News averaged million total viewers and , in the demo over total day. The Murdochs got some other quarterly good news today in the news department with Fox Business Network scoring its 10th consecutive most watched win over once unbeatable CNBC. To get into the numbers, FBN had , viewers during the business day to CNBC&#;s , &#; a 3% advantage. Among the demo of eager investors and others, CNBC was in first place with 34, to FBN&#;s 20, during the hours the U.S. markets are open.

Fox News Tops June And Q2 Viewership, But Plunge In Ratings Continues Across All Major Cable News Networks

Fox News also is pointing to the launch of Gutfeld! in April as a standout in the 11 PM ET timeslot, averaging million viewers in the quarter to beat the competition on CNN and MSNBC in the timeslot. The show also has drawn more total viewers than other network late-night shows, albeit Gutfeld! doesn&#;t compete head-to-head on the West Coast, where it airs at 8 PM PT.

Sean Hannity Clobbers Rachel Maddow in the Ratings: Incoherent Lectures and Sermons Always Lose

CNN fails to snag MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, as ratings-challenged, all-male primetime lineup continues

Media top headlines August 23

In media news today, a CBS reporter instructs the White House staff to show Biden the poll about his job approval falling, Bill Maher and Andrew Sullivan pan newsrooms for caving to the 'woke mobs,' and a CNN panel blasts Biden's 'bizarre' messaging on Afghanistan

Rachel Maddow could have helped solve two of CNN’s most embarrassing issues if she joined its ranks, as it’s the only relevant cable news network without a female primetime host and struggles to attract viewers. But CNN will need a new savior after Maddow decided to stay with rival liberal network MSNBC.

Maddow "fielded interest from CNN" before deciding at remain at MSNBC, according to the Wall Street Journal. Axios also reported CNN was among her suitors.

The left-wing network star extended her contract with MSNBC and NBCUniversal, signing a new multi-year agreement on Friday that will allow her to develop other projects in partnership with the company while she continues to host "The Rachel Maddow Show." The news was first reported by former NBC News media reporter Claire Atkinson for Business Insider and has since been confirmed to Fox News by a person familiar with the matter.

News that Maddow was pondering her future was reported by liberal publications as talks with MSNBC dragged on, and many industry insiders believed Maddow’s team was using the media as leverage in contract negotiations with NBCUniversal.

When Maddow’s potential exit was reported, fans and MSNBC colleagues alike began to publicly praise her. "I want to just tell you that you are our North Star. You are revered and respected," MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi told Maddow on air the day after The Daily Beast reported she was "seriously" considering bolting.

Velshi doesn’t have to worry.

CNN’s male-only, progressive primetime lineup of Anderson Cooper, the embattled Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon frequently fails to attract even one million viewers, while Maddow is typically the most-watched program outside of Fox News in cable news. She's hosted her titular show since

During the month of July, Maddow averaged million viewers to finish as cable news’ No. 4 program behind only "Tucker Carlson Tonight," "Hannity" and "The Five." The most popular show on CNN’s lineup was the scandal-plagued Cuomo's "Cuomo Prime Time," which averaged only , nightly viewers to finish No.

Maddow has a passionate liberal fan base who surely would have switched over to CNN if she made the jump and could have brought the struggling network at least one ratings winner. She was one of the chief proponents of Russia-related conspiracy theories during the Trump administration.

However, with Maddow set to remain at MSNBC, CNN’s male-dominated lineup will remain in place for now.

CNN’s pursuit of Maddow could be seen as an indictment of Cuomo, who has tarnished the network’s reputation for his role in his big brother’s sexual harassment scandal. Maddow and Cuomo compete during the 9 p.m. hour, with the MSNBC host typically dominating Cuomo in the ratings department, but it’s not clear if CNN expressed interest in Maddow to replace Cuomo or if she would have occupied a different timeslot.

CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN president Jeff Zucker is famously close with Cuomo and has stood by him throughout the ordeal surrounding his involvement in soon-to-be-former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s, D., various scandals. One former CNN employee who worked closely with Cuomo recently told Fox News that the "Cuomo Prime Time" namesake has a direct line to the boss and would be protected at all costs.

CNN has long been the only cable news network without a female primetime host. Former anchor Brooke Baldwin recently slammed the network over its lack of opportunities for women.

"The most influential anchors on our network, the highest-paid, are men. My bosses, my executives, are men. The person who oversees CNN Dayside is a man, and my executive producer for 10 years is a man. So I’ve been surrounded by a lot of men," Baldwin said on the Ms. Magazine podcast.

Baldwin was even taken off the air and replaced by Jake Tapper for the month leading up to the election. A fan asked on social media, "Why are you taking so many weeks off at such an important time?"

"Not my choice," Baldwin replied.

In , Hollywood trade publication TheWrap analyzed weekday programming on various networks and found CNN didn’t have as many female anchors as competitors.

"CNN has significantly fewer women serving in visible on-air roles than either Fox News or MSNBC," TheWrap reported.

Baldwin, arguably the most high-profile woman on CNN when the study was conducted, has since exited.

Maddow would have been CNN’s biggest female star if she decided to jump ship, but the network will have to look elsewhere if it wants to finally put a woman in primetime or find a path to ratings respectability.
