Minecraft Skyblock One Block, but its HARDCORE [ep3]

How to Play SkyBlock in "Minecraft"

Dreamhowl has been playing "Minecraft" since 2012. She enjoys building, farming, and breeding animals. She especially enjoys magic modpacks!

What Is SkyBlock?

In Minecraft, "SkyBlock" is a survival map where players live and build on a floating island. The goal of the map is to survive without cheating, expand your island, grow your own food, and thrive. There are many variations of the SkyBlock map—the original focuses on a floating dirt island in an ice biome. Players of SkyBlock begin the game with the following materials.

Materials

  • 26 blocks of dirt
  • 1 oak tree
  • 1 chest
  • 1 lava bucket
  • 1 block of ice

SkyBlock can be played solo or by multiple players (as many as can fit on the island). But to make survival a challenge, SkyBlock should not be played on Peaceful. SkyBlock is a great way to take a break from other Minecraft worlds and projects. You can play the map as quick as you can, or you can take your time. But to enjoy the map, players should follow four basic rules.

Rules

  1. Do not make a bridge to the mainland.
  2. Do not jump off of the island for max health.
  3. Play on at least Easy difficulty.
  4. Do not use cheats for any purpose.

The goal of SkyBlock is not to make a staircase to the mainland for supplies, though that may seem tempting! Players are also discouraged from jumping off of the island (to their death) to regenerate their health. Instead, players should work toward growing their own food to prevent starvation. They should play on Easy (at least), and turning on Minecraft cheats to fly or spawn something into the world isn’t allowed. Cheats make it far too easy to complete SkyBlock challenges.

What Are SkyBlock Challenges?

On the SkyBlock map download page, there is a list of challenges for players to work toward. Completing challenges doesn’t award anything extra, but many provide important resources. Players are not required to complete all the challenges—it's up to you how you play! Each challenge can be completed with the materials on the island provided to the player. The SkyBlock challenges consist of the following:

Each SkyBlock challenge leads to another. For example, building a cobblestone generator provides an unlimited source of cobblestone. Cobblestone can then be used to make a house. But players don't need to complete the challenges in order. I’ve listed the challenges most related to survival in SkyBlock by order of necessity. The order of this list is not set in stone, but more of a guideline for new players, covering the basics of the map.

A cobblestone generator provides an infinite supply of cobblestone.
A cobblestone generator provides an infinite supply of cobblestone.
Break the ice block and get out your wooden pick axe!

A cobblestone generator provides an infinite supply of cobblestone.

1. Build a Cobblestone Generator

Cobblestone forms where lava and water meet. A cobblestone generator provides an infinite supply of cobblestone! Once you start your SkyBlock world, you will find one bucket of lava and one block of ice inside of a chest. To make your own simple cobblestone generator, do the following in a four-block line:

  1. Dig down one block and place the ice block on top.
  2. Dig down two blocks to the right of the ice block.
  3. Leave the next dirt block in place.
  4. Dig down one block and place the lava on top.

Once you have your cobblestone generator set up, break the ice block. The ice will become water and flow into the two-block deep hole next to it. The third dirt block should now be the only thing separating the water and lava. Breaking the dirt block will cause the water and lava to collide, creating a block of cobblestone. Get ready to start mining!

Build a simple cobblestone house to store your bed and valuables.
Build a simple cobblestone house to store your bed and valuables.
Your starter house only needs to be big enough to take shelter in!

Build a simple cobblestone house to store your bed and valuables.

2. Build a House

Once you mine a couple stacks of cobblestone, you can start to build a house. Since you now have infinite cobblestone, it is the best building material to use. You can always swap it out later with something fancier! It doesn’t matter how big your house is, as long as a bed and other valuables fit inside. A cobblestone house will protect you from hostile mobs until you can defend yourself. I like to keep important materials in my house, like a crafting table, furnace, and chest.

3. Expand the Island

Access to infinite cobblestone allows you to expand the island and make room for future projects. And you’ll need the dirt from the island to start a farm and provide a food source. The sooner you can start expanding the island and collecting this dirt, the better. You’ll need to get below the island to collect each block of dirt. You can make a waterfall off the edge of the island with a bucket of water to get down and build a platform under the dirt. Do whatever works best for you, as long as you don’t lose dirt in the process!

Four string will craft wool, which is normally sheared from sheep.
Four string will craft wool, which is normally sheared from sheep.
Beds help you set your spawn point and sleep through the dangerous night!

Four string will craft wool, which is normally sheared from sheep.

4. Craft a Bed

Beds are important commodities in SkyBlock. If you die while playing, you aren’t guaranteed to spawn back on the island. You may have to respawn up to eight or ten times before you end up back on your floating island. With a bed, you can set your spawn point to avoid the hassle. While you don’t have sheep in SkyBlock, you can use string to make wool instead. Once night falls, go hunting for spiders where the monsters spawn on your SkyBlock island. This becomes easier once you have a monster spawning platform.

5. Make a Wheat Farm

While you can survive on rotten flesh, who wants to do that? Growing a wheat farm is a great way to ensure a sustainable food source. Wheat takes a couple of days to grow and can be crafted into bread, which restores six hunger points apiece. Wheat seeds come from breaking tall grass. As long as you lay out your dirt blocks in a square and let the grass spread, you will get seeds. Carrots restore more hunger than wheat, but players do not start with carrots in SkyBlock. The only way to get carrots is a lucky drop from a killed zombie.

6. Make a Pumpkin Farm

While pumpkins are not a necessity, it helps to have a little farm. Players can use pumpkins to make pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie restores eight hunger points (more than bread) and puts your pumpkins to good use! To craft pumpkin pie, you will need one pumpkin, one sugar, and one egg. Sugar is obtained from sugarcane, and chickens lay eggs. Chickens can spawn into your world if you make a platform 24 blocks away from where you spend the most time. On this platform, place all your dirt blocks and allow the grass to spread. Once all dirt blocks become grass blocks, chickens will start to spawn.

7. Make a Sugarcane Farm

Sugarcane doesn’t serve much of a purpose in SkyBlock aside from making sugar for pumpkin pie. Originally, players could craft bookshelves with paper (from sugarcane) and leather (from cows). But the spawn rate of animals has decreased, and cows and sheep are no longer likely to spawn on your island. Chickens and pigs still spawn in large areas of grass blocks.

Furnaces are made of eight cobblestone, an infinite resource in Skyblock!

Smelting a wood log with another wood log yields one charcoal.
Since you cannot mine coal in Skyblock, charcoal is the only way to craft torches.

Furnaces are made of eight cobblestone, an infinite resource in Skyblock!

8. Craft a Furnace

Players craft a furnace with eight blocks of cobblestone in a crafting table. Furnaces heat blocks and transform them into other items. For example, iron ore is only smelted into iron in a furnace. In SkyBlock, furnaces are important for making charcoal and cooking food. You cannot mine coal in SkyBlock because there is nowhere to mine it! Charcoal results from burning wood blocks in a furnace. To get your first few lumps of charcoal, you can burn woodblocks by using saplings or other woodblocks as fuel. You can then place the charcoal in the furnace to cook more items, or in the crafting table to make torches.

9. Craft Torches

Torches are essential to survive mobs in SkyBlock. As you expand your island, you will have more (unlit) surface area for mobs to spawn on at night. Too many mobs can mean disaster, especially if your house isn’t well built or fortified. To craft torches, all you need are sticks and lumps of coal or charcoal. Placing a torch next to a water block also keeps it from freezing into an ice block. Since the original SkyBlock map exists in an ice biome, using torches this way is very handy.

10. Craft Stone Slabs

Did you know that mobs cannot spawn on half slabs? It doesn’t matter what material the slabs are made of—cobblestone, stone, wood, etc. To craft slabs, place three of the same building material in a row in a crafting table. For example, three cobblestones in a row makes cobblestone slabs. When you expand your island, try using slabs to prevent hostile mobs from spawning. But placing other blocks on slabs makes them float. And mobs can still spawn on double slabs, so be careful!

11. Make an Infinite Water Source

An infinite water source lets water be gathered with buckets without depleting the source. The easiest way to make your own infinite water source is to make a 3x1 rectangle of water. By only drawing water from the middle block, you have an endless supply of water for any need! Water is necessary for farms and is great for making waterfalls over the edge of a block to travel through. You can also use water to make your own lake to catch fish in.

12. Make a Small Lake

Why make a small lake on your SkyBlock island? While a lake provides an even bigger infinite water supply, you can also use it to catch fish. If you aren’t having much luck with a wheat, melon, or pumpkin farm, fish can be a staple to your survival.

Once you have a small lake, you’ll need a fishing rod. To craft a fishing rod, place three sticks diagonally with two string hanging from the end. To fish, right-click to cast into your lake. When the fishing bob dips underwater (followed by a splashing sound), right-click again. You can cook fish in a furnace for maximum hunger points!

13. Build a Platform for Mobs to Spawn

Building your own mob spawner is a great way to get materials like string, rotten flesh, bones, and arrows. Build a platform 24 blocks away from your SkyBlock home to spawn mobs. Surround the area with a fence or another barrier to prevent escape. Try building a higher platform above this one with a hole in the middle for mobs to fall through. If the platform is high enough, the mobs will die on impact, dropping their loot on the ground for you to gather. Remember, you can prevent mobs from spawning by building the bottom platform out of slabs!

Skyblock is one of the most popular survival gamemodes. The idea is that you can create and expand your very own world infinitely with only minimal materials.

You start on a small island floating in the middle of void with a few items and a single tree and you must learn to use and preserve your materials wisely as each one has a strategic use, (for example lava buckets), and to know the basics of Minecraft in order to complete challenges and to expand. It is normal to make beginner mistakes, sometimes requiring many restarts.

There are countless Skyblock maps that can be found over various Minecraft community websites. You can also play online by choosing a Skyblock multiplayer server. Skyblock is widely known as being the most popular map and gamemode ever created on Minecraft while being highly popular for almost a decade, with gameplay and tutorials from just about every Youtuber including MrBeast, PewDiePie, CaptainSparklez and others. Skyblock was created by the user Noobcrew.

Global Progression[]

Since there is no normal terrain to explore, setting up farms for resources is vital to game progression.

Your first day[]

Your first day will mainly depend on the skyblock map. If you have any grass or flowers, mine them and try to get at least one seed. Then, break the dirt on your island, leave at least a few grass blocks. Place the dirt around the tree so that it catches the dropped saplings. Chop down the tree and make a crafting table and wooden pickaxe. Catch the saplings and replant them. If you have a chest, open it and check the items. You usually start out with a few crops like sugar cane, melons, and pumpkins, some obsidian for a portal. Some maps also give you 2 turtle eggs since you cannot find them anywhere else. There is also a bucket of lava and ice. To make a cobblestone generator, dig a one block deep T-shaped hole. Put a block in the center, water and lava on two others slots. Break the center block, get in the last slot, and break the cobblestone that forms. Make sure that the blocks that surround the lava are not flammable, or they will burn. Mine as much cobblestone as you can and make a full set of stone tools. Make a small shelter out of wood or cobblestone to prevent phantoms and other monsters.

Crops and Trees[]

If you start with crops, plant them around the water at your cobblestone generator. For your second and third day, you want to gather as much wood and cobblestone as you can. If you have an oak tree, you can get apples for your food. If you started with a melon, make melon seeds and plant them. If you get a melon block, you can break it for melons, which you can also eat.

Mob Farm[]

Hostile mob farms are very important because they are a source of bones, strings, redstone dust, iron ingots, potatoes and carrots, among many other drops. Building a mob farm is mandatory to get the crops to start crop farming. It is also an abundant source of rotten flesh, which you can now eat instead of apples. Multiple mob farms designs are explained in the page Tutorials/Mob farm, however, the vast majority of efficient designs need water or redstone circuits.

This hostile mob farm design shown by ilmango uses the mob pathfinding mechanics to lure them into a drop shaft, without the need of water or redstone circuits (note that spiders can't spawn in this farm) :

You should also make a temporary passive mob farm to get animals: to do that, use cobblestone to bridge away from your island, and hope a passive mob spawns.

Crop Farm[]

You can get wheat from the seeds at the start of your island. Along with melon and potato seeds. Killing skeletons will yield bones which can be converted to bonemeal, in order to quickly grow crops in the beginning. On higher versions of Minecraft, killing zombies will also drop carrots and potatoes, which you can farm as well as lure and breed pigs.

Getting Water[]

Water is extremely useful in a Skyblock world for many uses, and allows you to pillar down easily for building or to save you from death. It is also used to irrigate farmland.

An ice block can be broken by hand to create flowing water.

By using two sources of water, usually included in a chest or as ice blocks apart of the island, you can create an infinite water source. Dig a 2x2 hole 1 block deep, place two water sources in opposite corners, and the merging flows will create new water source blocks. Use a bucket on any of the now-four water blocks, and the removed water will be replaced by a new water source block when the flows merge. If the source blocks are too far apart, the merging flows will be too weak to create a source block, and so cannot become infinite.

Another option is placing a cauldron below open sky and waiting for rain, which will very slowly fill the cauldron with water. When the cauldron is full, you can empty it with a bucket. With 2 bucketfuls of water, you can make an infinite water source. If you're playing on versions above 1.13, you can also use Bone Meal in water to spawn seagrass and more water sources, which you can then pick up with a bucket.

Getting Villagers[]

Getting villagers is crucial for your progression, because it is the only way to get emeralds, diamond tools and armor, and the only way to reliably get enchanted books. To get villagers, you will need to cure the rare zombie villagers, which sometimes spawn in mob farms or such.

To cure zombie villagers, you will need to give them the Weakness status effect, and then use a golden apple on them. There are several ways of doing this: to give a zombie villager the Weakness status effect, you can use a witch (which is more tedious) or make a splash potion of Weakness (which requires to get in the Nether).

To make a witch give Weakness to your zombie villager, you will need to get near the witch with it and have less than 8♥♥♥♥ health points. There will be then a 25% chance that the witch will throw a splash potion of Weakness. To make your own potion, you need to get a brewing stand, a fermented spider eye and some gunpowder. Note that you will need a brown mushroom to do that, which requires trading with a wandering trader, which itself requires an emerald. In turn, this method is highly impractical for the first villager conversion.

To get the golden apples, you will need gold ingots and apples. Getting the apples is easy, but getting the gold is harder. You can either go to the Nether and kill zombified piglins, smelt golden armor dropped by monsters, or kill drowned, which sometimes drop gold ingots (Note how this will not work in the 1.17 update as a drowned will now drop copper ingots instead of gold ingots).

It is strongly advised to build a villager breeder as soon as possible, in order to avoid doing this tedious process multiple times.

Iron Farm[]

Iron farms are very useful in a Skyblock world, because they allow way easier access to iron ingots. To make the smallest possible iron farm, you will need 3 villagers, 3 beds, and a zombie holding an item (to not de-spawn). Keep in mind that only a small percentage of zombies have this ability, so you will have to try several zombies.

This video by Ray features at the beginning a simple iron farm design, which uses lava in the killing zone but could use another killing system that doesn't need some. The rates are about 320 iron ingots/hour.

When your needs for iron get larger, you can just make multiples copies of the farm or build a larger design.

Nether Skyblock[]

Some Skyblock maps either start the player in The Nether, or give the player access to the Nether through some alternative method.

There are 5 biomes in the Nether, and each of them has unique properties that are interesting in a skyblock context:

Gold Farm[]

To make a gold farm, make a platform up to 23 blocks away (ensuring the platform is within the Nether Wastes biome) and make a roof out of slabs and wait. A little while later, you should see some zombified piglins spawning. Killing them can give the player gold nuggets, which then gives access to Bartering.

Bartering will yield many useful resources (such as iron, Ender Pearls, leather, string, obsidian).

Fortress Farm[]

If structures are not disabled upon World Generation, Nether Fortresses can still spawn in the void, extending up from the Void. This gives access to a variety of items, such as Coal, Bones, Blaze Rods, Soul Sand, and (most importantly) Wither skeleton skulls. This allows the player to kill the Wither.

Obtainable Items[]

Overworld[]

The most efficient way to get an item is written in bold.

Ways of getting items requiring lava are written in italic.
