The Size of a MacBook

By Dan Wonder

Apple's MacBook lines incorporate an aluminum design.

For business professionals who are on the go, owning a laptop that is relatively easy to carry around is ideal. The MacBook notebook computers from Apple are just such machines. As of 2013, Apple offers three versions of the MacBook. There’s the upper-level MacBook Pro, an enhanced-screen-resolution version called MacBook Pro with Retina Display and the ultraportable and thin MacBook Air.

Background

The MacBook Pro was the first of the MacBook notebooks that Apple released. It made its debut in January 2006. Two years later, Apple began manufacturing a MacBook that combined the performance of the brand with greater portability. Called the MacBook Air, the computer marketed as the “World’s Thinnest Notebook” was available for sale in January 2008. Apple began offering the MacBook Pro with Retina Display in 2012.

MacBook Pro

Apple manufactures the MacBook Pro as a 13-inch or 15-inch laptop, with diagonal measurements of 13.3 inches and 15.4 inches, respectively. They have a height of 0.95 inches. The width and depth of the 13-inch version are 12.78 inches and 8.94 inches, respectively. The 15-inch MacBook Pro measures 14.35 inches in width and 9.82 inches in depth. The weight of the MacBook Pro laptops is 4.5 pounds for the 13-inch model and 5.6 pounds for the 15-inch model.

MacBook Pro With Retina Display

The MacBook Pro with Retina Display is available as a 13-inch or 15-inch notebook, with the same diagonal screen measurements as the standard version. Apart from that, though, the Retina Display model is smaller and lighter than the standard MacBook Pro. The 13-inch laptop is 12.35 inches wide, 8.62 inches deep and 0.75 inches high. The 15-inch model is 14.13 inches wide, 9.73 inches deep and 0.71 inches high. The 13-inch model weighs 3.57 pounds, while the 15-inch model weighs 4.46 pounds.

MacBook Air

Apple designs the MacBook Air as a smaller and lighter version of the MacBook Pro lineup. It is available as an 11-inch or 13-inch notebook, with diagonal measurements of 11.6 inches and 13.3 inches, respectively. The MacBook Air has a height of 0.68 inches. The 11-inch version is 11.8 inches wide and 7.56 inches deep, while the 13-inch version is 12.8 inches wide and 8.94 inches deep. The 11-inch version weighs 2.38 pounds and the 13-inch version weighs 2.96 pounds.

  1. Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction MacBook Air systems with Apple M1 chip and 8-core GPU, configured with 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular websites with display brightness set to 8 clicks from bottom. The Apple TV app movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 1080p content with display brightness set to 8 clicks from bottom. Battery life varies by use and configuration. See apple.com/batteries for more information.
  2. 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
  3. Weight varies by configuration and manufacturing process.
  4. iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are available on the Mac App Store. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID and a device that is compatible with the OS version required for each app.
  5. Data accurate as of product launch.
  6. Recycled material claim applies to the enclosure and is based on auditing done by UL LLC.
  7. ENERGY STAR and the ENERGY STAR mark are registered trademarks owned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Every Apple product is free of PVC and phthalates with the exception of AC power cords in India, Thailand (for two-prong AC power cords), and South Korea, where we continue to seek government approval for our PVC and phthalates replacement.
  9. Trade-in values will vary based on the condition, year, and configuration of your eligible trade-in device. Not all devices are eligible for credit. You must be at least 18 years old to be eligible to trade in for credit or for an Apple Gift Card. Trade-in value may be applied toward qualifying new device purchase, or added to an Apple Gift Card. Actual value awarded is based on receipt of a qualifying device matching the description provided when estimate was made. Sales tax may be assessed on full value of a new device purchase. In-store trade-in requires presentation of a valid photo ID (local law may require saving this information).
