Late last month, Chevy said its all-new Trailblazer would start at under $20,000. Today, we have official pricing, and Chevy kept its promise. According to Car and Driver, the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer will start at $19,995; however, pricing excludes fees and other charges. The sub-$20,000 price is for the base L trim.
For $19,995 and some change, customers receive a 137-horsepower (102-kilowatt), 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine powering the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. Customers will pay $22,495 to upgrade to the LS tribe while all-wheel drive is a $2,000 extra, but that also comes with a larger, 1.3-liter three-cylinder making 155 horsepower (115 kilowatts). It’s the only other engine available for the model.
Just like L and LS, the LT comes with the 1.2-liter mill as standard, starting at $24,595, but customers can opt for the larger 1.3-liter engine as a standalone option or spend $2,000 to get both the mill and AWD.
Both the Trailblazer ACTIV and RS start at the same $26,395, but they are aimed at different customers. The ACTIV trim is designed to be the model’s off-road-oriented trim featuring a larger grille, Hankook Sport Terrain tires, and tuned dampers. The 1.3-liter engine is standard, while AWD in this trim is an extra $1,500. The top-tier trim is the Trailblazer RS is the sportiest offering of the bunch, though in appearance only. The 1.3-liter is standard with AWD being a $1,500 option.
It's been a decade since the Chevy Trailblazer graced American roads with its presence. Since then, customer expectations about crossovers have changed. GM revived the nameplate in the U.S. to expand its growing lineup of crossovers at a time when car buyers can’t get enough of the body style. Just like its larger sibling, the Blazer, the smaller Trailblazer has aggressive styling that looks more like a sports car than a crossover – and that’s not a bad thing.
- The 2021 Chevy Trailblazer has a starting price of $19,995, and fully equipped models range up to $27,895.
- It's available in five trim levels including L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS, and all-wheel drive is optional on all but the base L.
- The 2021 Trailblazer will go on sale in early 2020.
The new Trailblazer is officially Chevy's cheapest SUV, starting at $19,995. Chevy had previously announced that this crossover would start under $20,000, and now we have more info including pricing details on the rest of this new model's trim levels, which include L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS.
The base L model is the one that carries that attractive sub-$20,000 price. It comes standard with a turbo 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower, a continuously variable transmission, and front-wheel drive. A 7.0-inch touchscreen comes standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Trailblazer LS starts at $22,495 and opens up the option of all-wheel drive, which costs $2000 extra. Checking this box also adds a more powerful turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower, and the LS also gets 17-inch wheels as opposed to the L's 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers.
Chevrolet
At $24,595, the LT adds more equipment and comes standard with the 1.2-liter engine and front-wheel drive. The more powerful 1.3-liter motor is a standalone option at this level with front-wheel drive, and the LT AWD model costs $2000 extra and comes standard with the bigger engine.
Chevrolet
The Trailblazer Activ, starting at $26,395, is positioned as an off-road trim level and comes with a larger grille opening, different 17-inch wheels, and Hankook Sport Terrain tires, along with different tuning for the dampers. Both front- and all-wheel-drive versions of the Activ come standard with the 1.3L engine, and all-wheel drive costs $1500 extra here.
Chevrolet
Chevy says the Trailblazer RS, starting at $26,395, is the sportiest of the bunch, but its unique features essentially amount to appearance tweaks. Like the Activ, the 1.3L engine is standard across the board, and all-wheel drive is $1500 extra.

Overview
By and large, the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer is an appealing little crossover, with a snazzy design and smart packaging. The biggest drawback about Chevy's subcompact ute, which is visually inspired by the mid-size Blazer and proportional to the slightly tinier Trax, is its disappointing engines. Neither of its two turbocharged three-cylinders–a 137-hp 1.2-liter and a 155-hp 1.3-liter–have the gumption to move the Trailblazer eagerly, especially at highway speeds. Thankfully, it feels more responsive and nimbler around town thanks to quick steering and good body control. If only its ride wasn't so harsh. Still, the Trailblazer's interior is spiffy and boasts an adult-friendly back seat as well as a feature-laden infotainment system. While the fanciest models have the best content, their high prices lead to diminishing returns, but the lower trims can be well-equipped and largely satisfying.
What's New for 2022?
For 2022, Chevy makes the smallest of changes to the Trailblazer lineup. A heated steering wheel is now optional on the LT trim and standard on the ACTIV and RS. Roof rack cross rails and a trailering package with a trailer hitch, harness, and bezel are new dealer-installed options. The roster of metallic paint colors also expands to include Crimson, Blue Glow, Vivid Orange, and Mahogany Red.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
With a starting price of just under $25,000, we think the Trailblazer LT is the one to get. It comes standard with the less powerful three-cylinder. But for $2000, we'd upgrade from the 1.2-liter to the 1.3-liter and add all-wheel drive, which also brings a nine-speed automatic transmission. Selecting the Adaptive Cruise Control package adds a host of desirable features, including the aforementioned driver assist, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a rear center armrest. It also requires the Convenience package (automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, extra charging ports, a larger touchscreen, etc.) and either the Confidence II package or the Driver Confidence package. Opting for the latter brings a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
As with the Encore GX, the Trailblazer offers two different turbocharged three-cylinder engines, a 1.2-liter and a 1.3-liter. The former produces 137 horsepower and the latter generates 155 horses. The 1.2-liter engine comes only with front-wheel drive and is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while the 1.3-liter offers optional all-wheel drive. Opting for the all-wheel drive system also replaces the standard CVT with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic. The acceleration of a 1.3-liter all-wheel drive Trailblazer failed to impress us at our test track, delivering a leisurely 9.4-second 60-mph time. Around town at slower speeds, the Trailblazer feels peppier than its test results suggest, but merging onto the highway or executing high-speed passing maneuvers require planning. While the Trailblazer doesn't offer a particularly athletic chassis, it handles curves ably enough—but its ride is often harsh over road imperfections.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The most efficient Trailblazer, according to the EPA, is the front-wheel drive model with the larger 1.3-liter three-cylinder, which earns ratings of 29 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Upgrading to all-wheel drive reduces those numbers to 26 and 30, respectively. We tested an all-wheel drive model and it delivered 31 mpg over 200 miles of highway driving. We haven't run a Trailblazer with the smaller 1.2-liter engine and front-wheel drive on our highway test loop, but the EPA fuel economy estimates for that model are 29 mpg city and 31 highway. For more information about the Trailblazer's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The cabin's design isn't as cheeky as the exterior's, but it's spacious, functional, and outfitted with plenty of convenience items in the upper trims. The driving position is a high, SUV-like perch and there's plenty of space for two adults to be comfortable in the rear seat. Although most of the interior is rendered in black plastic, everything wears an attractive texture to avoid appearing cheap. Upper-level models add colored trim pieces and chrome embellishments that provide a more upscale look. Behind the rear seat is a generous cargo bay, and the Chevy provides not only fold-flat rear seats but also a folding front passenger seat to create space for extra-long items.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Trailblazer will be equipped with Chevy’s newest infotainment system, which will allow you to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard but an 8.0-inch unit is optional. It will have available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as well as Sirius XM satellite radio and opting for the Technology package allows for wireless connections to the two smartphone interfaces. A four-speaker stereo is standard on the base L but upgrading to higher trims brings either a six-speaker setup or a premium Bose stereo with seven speakers.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Chevrolet equips every Trailblazer with a set of basic driver-assistance technology and makes more advanced tech, such as adaptive cruise control, optional. For more information about the Trailblazer's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Chevrolet's standard warranty coverage is dead average when compared to many of the Trailblazer's rivals. Looking for something with a longer warranty? The Hyundai Kona, the Kia Seltos, and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport all offer up to 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage. The Trailblazer's first scheduled maintenance visit is complimentary, which is unusual among competitors, but the Hyundai outdoes the Chevy here with a free three-year maintenance plan.
- Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for the first visit
