Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: Understand this is an Inkjet printer, but what is Performance Beyond Laser? Does that mean this is basically the same printing quality as laser?

Answer: That's the Epson claim - as good or better than Laser There are three reasons to purchase laser printers: 1) It can print text of any size very sharp. 2) The toner is bonded permanently to paper and thus will never smudge 3) It's great for professional work / papers and professional-looking letterhead, auto-fed envelopes, etc. Epson's new ink-depositing system technology provides two things to try and match lasers 1) Ink droplets of 1 picoliter or smaller (for sharp text) and 2) A new ink formulation / heat-bonder to provide relatively good smudge resistance. Does this mean "Performance Beyond Laser" in the "Real World," it's pretty darn close to Laser, but our Lexmark color laser with True x dots-per-inch print quality still provides more accurate (thus sharper) fonts / text and more accurate color prints, AND it's prints don't smudge or run after being fully soaked in water However, our laser cost 6 times what this Epson does - so for the price - Epson's WF comes really close to laser quality and has lots of features, like printing from iPads and e-mail-to-direct print. We already use the Epson more than our Lexmark primarily because it's much faster and just about as good. Now, that's pretty darn telling for "Real World" and "Beyond Laser".
  • Question: Can the ADF scan both sides automatically?

Answer: As the previous answers say, the ADF does copy both sides automatically (provided you have it set to do that.) For me, it handles most copier and bond paper well. The problems I have had are with coated (glossy) magazine paper. Paper that is too thin or too thick will not feed properly, so those have to be scanned manually on the flatbed. Even coated paper that is "just right" will sometimes misfeed and have to be redone. Thick material like some journal covers also have to be manually scanned on the flatbed.
  • Question: Can you scan written notes and e-mail to someone without needing a computer?

Answer: Yes, you can. The main panel screen has options to save / send to a PC / Mac as a scan file, a PDF or a JPG -- AND it allows you to send scans via e-mail through the e-mail address you set up specifically for your Epson printer. Or directly to a Dropbox account - very handy. The e-mail address is set up through Epson's Connect printer E-mail configuration - it's free and takes 3 steps to do and your printer is assigned an e-mail address on Epson's own cloud services. You can change the assigned name to something more easily remembered. This address can also be used to SEND e-mails to the printer from anywhere in the world to auto-print. The one caveat - to set up the e-mail address for the printer - you must do it first through a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone or Chromebook using a standard web browser. Visit Epson Connect for more details ( ). This is were we went first to ensure iPad features before getting this printer.
  • Question: Is there an option to scan multiple pages to separate files (35 pages to 35 PDFs instead of one PDF with 35 pages)?

Answer: Yes, in the scan options menu, it can be set to scan each individual page - 35 pages to 35 PDFs instead of one PDF with 35 pag
  • Question: What's the difference between the WF and This WF ? I have the WF Do I need to Upgrade ?

Answer: Bottom line I like the a lot more than the (which dates back to the and - which I owned) Some times I do a lot of printing - other times the printer sits. The has different print head technology that differs from the previous 3 mentioned above. So far I am not finding any need to clean print heads on the which as u know wastes a lot of ink. I found that to be more of an issue on previous generations. The imput panel is superior with real keys as opposed to all touch panel. I reall like it a better and it appears to be a little more economical (just a feeling) I find myself the most pleased with this model - go onto Epson's site - they did change and improve the print head technology. Hope this helps. Feature wise they are very similar.

  • Question: how much is ink

Answer: $40 for the package of 3 colors, black ink is not sell it on a package of other colors; Black ink cost from $15 to $ Hope this help you, have a great day.
  • Question: Does it come with ink cartridges in package?

Answer: It did contain ink cartridges!
  • Question: does it print good photos

Answer: I sort of have the same question, but I have seen different answers. I think it probably depends upon your expectations as to what YOU mean by good photos. I have seen people report very good results using Epson brand quality photo paper, specifically. The inks and specific papers are designed to work with each other to render proper color and dynamics. I have read that the PrecisionCore printer heads do a better job than the ones in the That being said, the DuraBrite pigment inks are designed to be very good all around inks. Epson has inks created for printers that are photo-centric that are more expensive to use, but will be even better at creating professional quality photos on their branded paper. If you look at their website, you'll see three or four different levels of inks. The higher level photo printers utilize anywhere from different color cartridges (including several types of blacks as well as gray) in order to render greater nuance. Again, ink prices might be double or more the cost of the DuraBrite. So it comes down to what you're looking for. The photo-centric printers aren't going to do as good a job at printing text as the inks won't work as well on plain paper as the DuraBrite inks supposedly will. Again, Epson has designed the DuraBrite ink to be a really good all-arounder. If you're looking for a printer to show around family photos and snapshots, or even print out trial prints of amateur hobby photos, this would probably be fine. As one reviewer stated, only if you put the photos from this side-by-side with a really good dedicated photo printer will you really notice the difference. If you're looking, on the other hand, for a printer to rival the better photo reproduction houses, you're going to have to spend considerably more to get to that level for the printer (probably at least double the price) and spend more on the inks themselves, even just to print text documents.

Disappointing unless you like errors

I don't think I'll consider an Epson printer after having this one. I spent the extra money to buy this thinking that I would get what I paid for. After all, Epson talks this thing up with a great spec sheet, and it sure fooled me. I've owned it for 6 years now, and I have finally just seen one error message too many on this. Pros: * Simple to set up * Mobile app works as expected on Android * Scanner works pretty well. I used it quite a bit, and you have decent control with the Epson SCAN software on Windows * Only experienced one paper jam over 6 years, and it was easy to clear Cons: * When printing in black and white, the printer uses the color ink cartridges which makes this printer VERY expensive to run * Cartridges are expensive. About $75 for the set (XL Black plus colors) * Printing almost ALWAYS did ok except it would misprint a third of the way down the page, and then the rest would be fine * Cartridge errors ran rampant on this printer. I used Epson Genuine cartridges, and it would say that the cartridge is not recognized, and then later it would suddenly work. It's now completely dead with this same error. * When receiving errors, you can choose Remind Later. "Later" according to this printer means about 15 seconds later. So if you want to actually use the B&W copy function while it's not recognizing the Cyan cartridge, you have to press Remind Later at least 3 or 4 times. Overall, I hate spending a few hundred dollars for something this frustrating. It's annoying, noisy, lacking in print quality, and expensive. I don't mind paying for quality, but quality is not what you'll be paying for here. It has misbehaved since I first bought it. In hindsight, I should have tried to have it repaired, but the issues just seemed operational rather than mechanical. Oh well, no more Epson printers for me.

Worked 7 years

It broke it when I was printing both side print and Jammed. After that I got error sign on screen then all the trouble shooting didn't work. I bought WF after that.It can do bigger print and scan. Use same ink as WF so I didn't have to get rid of it.I like WF better.

You'll never forget when to replace the ink.

The printer is decent in the printing department - it works well on both normal paper and moderate weight card stock. It will definitely print ink onto paper, which is the bare minimum of what a printer should do, and it does that well enough. But where this printer simply shines is reminding you when you need to add ink. Oh it doesn't matter if you are using the scan or copy functionality, it will still remind you to refill the ink. The reminder is very helpful - it will appear repeatedly (about once a minute) and will require you to click "remind me later" before you can continue using the scanner or copier. By the way, "later" is one minute. Seriously though, avoid this printer. It's a giant user-unfriendly pain. The Epson connect utility is awful for connecting to your PC, the setting nav on the touchscreen is pretty awful and settings for an action (like the dpi for scanning) do not persist between actions - even without restating the printer.
