As Harley-Davidson celebrates its 115th Anniversary this year, TMW takes a look back to Harley-Davidson’s historic 100th Anniversary in 2003. There are very few motorcycle companies that have such a rich heritage, history and following as Harley-Davidson. Both a gift and a bane, H-D has been been evolving within the limitations of riders loyalty and comfort zone, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” has made H-D walk a successful but thin line.

Back in 2003, Harley-Davidson offered up 28 models running on either their Evolution 883/1130/1200, V-Twin Cam 88B engine, CVO Big Bore Twin Cam 95 or 103 cubic inch “Stroker” Twin Cam. 2003 also brought in the 2nd year of the most debated Harley-Davidson model, the VRSCA V-Rod, which started quite the controversy as it neither looked, handled or sounded like a typical H-D motorcycle. Faithful wondered if the V-Rod engine would find its way into another line but it never did. The V-Rod would continue for another 14 years before being discontinued, never achieving the success Harley-Davidson hoped for.
But in other ways Harley-Davidson has grown and evolved offering higher quality products, innovative designs, more powerful and larger engines and more selection. Back in 2003 riders had a choice of 28 models, which was a lot back then, today riders can choose from almost double, 48 models! And engine choice has expanded as well, even though the hallmark engine is a V-Twin, now you have a choice of air-cooled, liquid cooled, Revolution X 500/750, Evolution 883/1200, new Milwaukee-Eight 107/114/117 V-Twins. In the near future we may even have an electric Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the LiveWire Version 2.0… will the LiveWire 2.0 go the same route as the V-Rod or even Buell? Polite tradition calls for celebrating a union of 25 years with a gift of silver, and half a century is worthy of gold. But how do you mark 100 years? We suggest the gift of a hog.
Given the limits of human physiology (to say nothing of divorce trends), it's nearly a certainty you won't celebrate your own such milestone. So it's time to piggyback on Harley-Davidson's centennial celebration, happening at a dealership near you.
The 2003 Harleys are the 100th-anniversary editions of America's favorite motorcycle. They've come a long way in their century. In 1903, motorcycles were humble, if innovative, creatures. Only 18 years removed from their invention in 1885, they were simply bicycles with motors. Neighbors Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley began tinkering with their own version, and joined by Davidson's brothers William A. and Walter, the four created an engine in 1902 and the first Harley a year later, in a wooden shed behind Davidson's home. By 1919, Harley had become the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles, and over 100 years it weathered the Great Depression, cheap Japanese competition, quality problems and even a hostile takeover bid. Today, Harley-Davidson is the iconic American motorcycle, its products lions of the road.
You can choose from all manner of anniversary Harleys, from the smallish Sportsters to the hoggish Fat Boys, long-distance cruisers like the Road Glide, even an Ultra Classic Electra Glide, complete with a throwback sidecar. To enter the twenty-first century in style, go with the innovative V-Rod (pictured). Created for the 2002 model year, this is the newest Harley design on the market, powered by a racing-inspired, liquid-cooled, 115 horsepower engine that redlines at 9,000 rpm. The 600-pound, low-slung beast of a bike is Harley's current cock of the walk. Like all the anniversary bikes, the V-Rod proudly displays the centennial on the engine, with a special insignia and new paint schemes, replete with a liquid metal effect. This piece of history retails for $18,695.
Act quickly -- the anniversary models may be gone by year's end. And the odds don't favor any of us being around to celebrate 200 years of Harley hog heaven.

Harley-Davidson Anniversaries Through the Years
It’s hard to imagine one of Harley-Davidson’s company anniversary events being a small, private ceremony, but that’s how it all began.
The first observance of a Harley-Davidson anniversary can be traced to 1953, when the Motor Company marked its 50th anniversary. A small "birthday" ceremony was held in the front of Milwaukee's Capitol Drive plant during the annual sales conference to mark the occasion.
In the September, 1953 issue of The Enthusiast™ magazine, President William H. Davidson wrote “The founders of Harley-Davidson built well — on a solid foundation of ideals and principles which has resulted in the production of the world's finest motorcycles year after year. It is our pledge to you that Harley-Davidson's course for the future will continue to be charted unswervingly along the same traditional lines of constant development and improvement toward building better and better Harley-Davidsons.”
The next official company anniversary took place in 1978. For the 75th Anniversary, a small number of company executives and guests participated in a celebratory ride from seven different points across America to converge on Louisville, KY, and continue on to Milwaukee, visiting more than 100 dealerships along the way.
When Harley-Davidson reached the 80-year mark in 1983, times were very difficult. H-D had become independent from AMF only two years prior, and was facing a deep recession and financial losses. A unique 80th Anniversary logo was created to accompany marketing efforts, but Anniversary motorcycles were not built and no official events were held.
The 85th anniversary was commemorated in 1988 and set the standard for Motor Company anniversaries to follow. That year, approximately 60,000 riders converged on Milwaukee for entertainment, poker runs and many other events, and more than $500,000 was raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
For the 90th anniversary in 1993, ten separate rides departed from cities in the U.S. and Canada to converge on Milwaukee after a nine-day ride. About 100,000 riders came from points all over the world to help celebrate the event and the people of Milwaukee came out in droves to welcome the parade. For many, the community engagement was an emotional, memorable experience.
For the 95th Anniversary, approximately 135,000 riders came to Milwaukee, many by way of designated MDA ride routes. Events included the 15th anniversary H.O.G.® rally at State Fair Park in West Allis, Wis., free entertainment at Veterans Park on the lakefront, and the main celebration at the Summerfest grounds. For those who were there, the week was a powerful testimonial to the relationship Harley- Davidson has with its customers and Milwaukee.
Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary celebration was like no other. Beginning in the summer of 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia, the Open Road Tour circled the globe, carrying the message of the Motor Company’s first century to enthusiasts in eight cities around the world and concluding in Milwaukee, Wisc. over Labor Day weekend, 2003.
Approximately 250,000 people were in the area to help celebrate the occasion with music, tours, displays and exhibits all over Southeastern Wisconsin With the planning for the 105th Anniversary of 2008, rides converging on Milwaukee were a necessity, including stops at the assembly plants in York, Pennsylvania and Kansas City, Missouri. It was estimated that over 125,000 riders attended the events in Milwaukee, and it was the first time enthusiasts visited the brand new Harley-Davidson Museum, which opened only weeks earlier.
The 110th brought the return of a large-scale overseas celebration to complement Milwaukee. This time, Rome, Italy was the gathering center for riders of Europe and many other parts of the world. Events included a bike blessing by none other than Pope Francis in Vatican City. And, over Labor Day weekend in Milwaukee the H-D Museum was the epicenter of the celebration.
In 2018, Harley-Davidson will reach 115 years of continuous motorcycle manufacturing, with celebrations in Prague in July and Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend. No other motorcycle manufacturer can make this claim. Not every company celebrates anniversaries, and none do it in the way Harley-Davidson does.
