When you have a bank account with one of the biggest banks in the countries, you're likely to face the possibility of fees. Checking accounts from U.S. Bank are no different. Each of them has a monthly fee, including the dreaded overdraft fee.

For some U.S. Bank customers with checking accounts, dodging the monthly maintenance fee may be a little bit of a hassle when they cannot meet fee-waiver requirements easily. It could mean hundreds of dollars per year in bank fees. The price tag rises even more with its premium checking accounts.

Monthly Service Fees

U.S. Bank offers three main checking accounts: Silver Checking, Gold Checking, and Platinum Checking.

Silver Checking is the basic checking account that provides serves most of the banking needs of a typical consumer. It has a $ monthly fee that can be waived when you have a Package Money Market account and any of the following:

  • Combined monthly direct deposits of at least $1,
  • A combined average deposit balance of $1,

Gold Checking is a mid-tier checking account that also comes with perks such as two waived non-U.S. Bank ATM transactions per month and discounted overdraft protection transfers. The account has a $ monthly fee, which can only be waived with:

  • An open U.S. Bank personal loan or credit card

Platinum Checking is the top-tier premium checking account that waives fees for non-U.S. Bank ATM, overdraft protection transfers, money orders, personal checks, cashier's checks, money orders, and more. It has a pricey $ monthly fee that is waived with one of the following:

  • $25, in combined personal deposits, investments, and/or credit balances
  • A relationship with U.S. Bank Trust Services

Note: All monthly fees are reduced by $2 when you opt for electronic statements.

Tip for Silver Checking customers

Most of the checking accounts from U.S. Bank have straightforward fee-waiver requirements. There isn't much room for creativity there -- you either have the deposit balance or a deeper account relationship with U.S. Bank.

With direct deposits, however, you may be able to fulfill the requirements for Silver Checking without a traditional direct deposit. Some customers have reported that incoming transfers from online banks and PayPal have triggered direct deposit alerts. This means that it counts toward the fee waiver criteria. You may consider testing this for yourself to see if you can use other bank accounts to help you avoid the monthly fee.

Overdraft Fees Are Standard

Overdrafts happen when a transaction causes your checking account balance to fall below $0 and the bank puts up the money to complete the transaction -- even when you technically don't have enough money in your account.

Legally, a bank can only overdraw your account when you provide consent. You may have signed an agreement that allows or forbids the bank to do so. This consent only applies to debit card transactions and ATM withdrawals. Checks and recurring charges may still lead to overdrafts and overdraft fees.

Overdraft fees will only be charged on items that are more than $5. Also, if you make it so that your account is not overdrawn by more than $5 by the end of the day, overdraft fees are not charged for that day. On any single day, no more than four overdraft fees may be charged to your account.

Ways to minimize chances of overdraft

Because an overdraft can be so costly, it would be wise to avoid it as much as possible. Again, opting out of overdraft coverage would be a start.

More important, you should set up account alerts so that you known when your balance falls below a certain amount. This way, you know not to spend anymore.

Consider Online Banks as Alternatives

Online banks don't have the costs of running a physical branch and ATM networks. This allows them to charge lower fees and provide higher interest rates to customers. If you're constantly paying monthly fees and expensive overdraft fees, an online checking account is worthy of your consideration:

Log in to online banking and follow these steps to set up overdraft protection on your checking account. 

Online Banking steps:
  1. From the top menu, choose Customer Service and select Self Service.
  2. Select the Overdraft Options link within the Deposit Account & Check/ATM Cards section.
  3. Scroll to select the Overdraft Protection link at the bottom of the page.
  4. Choose the checking account you'd like to have covered.
  5. Select Edit to choose the overdraft protection account(s), then Save.

  1. From the account dashboard, select the account you want covered. Then select Account options.
  2. Select View account information from the pop-up menu.

  5. Hold and drag the account to change the overdraft protection order. Select Save.

If you are viewing your account using the web browser of your phone, you can access this feature by following the steps below.

Mobile Web steps:

  1. Select the checking account you want covered.
  2. Select the blue button with three dots at the bottom of the page to open the account menu.
  3. Select Manage overdraft protection.
  4. Select Add/Edit to choose the overdraft protection account(s).
  5. Review the accounts and the order in which they're in. If correct, select Save.

Types of Overdraft Options 

Standard Overdraft Coverage: It’s already yours
Most* consumer checking and money market accounts with U.S. Bank automatically come with Standard Overdraft Coverage. With this coverage, the following transactions may be covered:
• Checks and other transactions using your checking account number
• Automatic bill payments
• Recurring debit card transactions (such as insurance payments or monthly membership fees).

*Please note that the Safe Debit Checking account does not provide Standard Overdraft Coverage.

How does it work?
We’ll authorize and pay overdrafts for the above transactions at our discretion. That means we do not guarantee that we’ll always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we don’t authorize and/or pay a transaction that would cause an overdraft, your transaction will be declined or returned.

Are there fees?
Yes. U.S. Bank will charge $36 for each overdraft item we pay or return on your behalf. We charge that fee only when the overdraft item we pay or return on your behalf is $ or more.

There’s no fee for each overdraft item we pay or return on your behalf that is $ or less. If your Available Balance at the end of the business day is overdrawn by $ or less, a fee will not be charged.

U.S. Bank limits the number of charges to a daily maximum of 4 Overdraft Paid or Overdraft Returned Fees per day, no matter how many items we pay or return on your behalf. The Overdraft Fees assessed can be Overdraft Paid Fees, Overdraft Return Fees, or a combination of both.

ATM & Debit Card Overdraft Coverage: You make the choice
If you say ‘no’ to ATM & Debit Card Overdraft Coverage, we’ll decline your transaction and you won’t be charged a fee.

If you say ‘yes’ to ATM & Debit Card Overdraft Coverage, the following transactions may also be paid (at the bank’s discretion) for a fee:
• ATM withdrawals
• Everyday debit card transactions

You must make a choice of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for each Consumer Checking and Money Market account, but you can change your election at any time.

Are there any other options?
There sure are. We offer another option for covering overdrafts, which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft coverage:

Overdraft Protection
This option allows you to use another account to cover overdrafts on your checking account. All you have to do is link an eligible account* to your checking account to cover transactions which overdraw your checking account.

How it works:

  • If you overdraft on your checking account, funds will be automatically transferred from your linked account(s) to cover a negative Available Balance. Overdraft Protection Transfer Fees may apply. See Your Deposit Account Agreement and Consumer Pricing Information for details.
  • You can link up to three eligible account and select the order you’d like the accounts accessed for funds.
  • We will use all available funds in your linked account(s) and if the advanced amount doesn’t cover the amount of the transaction(s), Standard Overdraft Coverage will apply.

* Eligible account types include a U.S. Bank Savings account, a secondary U.S. Bank personal Checking account, a U.S. Bank Reserve Line of Credit, a U.S. Bank Credit Card, a U.S. Bank Personal Line of Credit and U.S. Bank Home Equity Line of Credit. Lines of credit and credit cards are subject to eligibility requirements and normal credit approval. Credit products may be subject to additional charges such as annual fees, interest will accrue on the amounts advanced. Please refer to the line of credit or credit card agreement for full details.

Account holders who are signers on the checking account must also be signers on the account linked for overdraft protection.

What is an overdraft?

An overdraft is a negative balance and can occur when you spend more money than what’s in your account.

What is overdraft protection?

Overdraft protection provides coverage when transactions exceed the balance in your account. This gives you peace of mind and eliminates the annoyance of a rejected check, debit card or ATM transaction, and the potential for overdraft fees.

How can I get overdraft protection?

To get overdraft protection, just link up to three eligible accounts1 to your checking account. Then funds can be transferred automatically if you overdraw your account.

Once you've decided which accounts you want your overdraft protection transfers to come from, you're ready to set up overdraft protection. To do this, simply do one of the following:

  • Log in to online banking, then go to your checking account and select the Overdraft protection options link.
  • Call us at USBANKS ().
  • Talk to a banker at a U.S. Bank branch.

How does overdraft protection work?

Once you link your accounts, funds will be automatically transferred from the linked overdraft protection account as follows:

  • If the negative available balance in your checking account is $ or more, funds may be transferred in multiples of $50, and the overdraft protection transfer fee will be charged.
  • If your negative available balance is $ or less, the transfer amount will be $, and the overdraft protection transfer fee will be waived.
  • When the overdraft protection transfer is made from a linked deposit account (U.S. Bank consumer savings account, money market or a secondary checking account), there is no fee.

If the account linked for overdraft protection doesn’t have sufficient funds to cover the overdraft:

  • The available balance in the linked account will be transferred to reduce the overdrawn amount.
  • If there’s another account linked to your checking account, funds will be transferred from that account in multiples of $50 to cover the remaining negative available balance.

For example, let’s say your checking account balance is $42 and the available balance in the linked credit account is $1, If you write a check for $, this would overdraw your checking account by $ We would transfer $ from the primary account linked for overdraft protection, which includes enough to cover your negative balance and your overdraft protection transfer fee.

Overdraft protection transfer fees (and how to avoid them)

When the overdraft protection transfer is made from a linked deposit account (U.S. Bank consumer savings account, money market or a secondary checking account), there is no fee. For most U.S. Bank checking accounts, this fee is no more than $ if the transfers are made from a linked U.S. Bank credit account (U.S. Bank Reserve Line of Credit, U.S. Bank credit card, U.S. Bank Personal Line, U.S. Bank Home Equity Line of Credit, and/or other lines of credit).

Ways to reduce or avoid overdraft protection transfer fees:

  • Set up account alerts and receive email or text messages when your balance is low or when payments are due.
  • Monitor your account and transfer funds into your checking account on your own before an overdraft occurs.
  • Explore your checking account options by visiting your local U.S. Bank branch or by calling USBANKS().

What’s the difference between overdraft protection and standard overdraft coverage?

Overdraft protection lets you link accounts so you can transfer funds to your checking account if a check, debit card or ATM transaction exceeds the available balance in your account.

The term standard overdraft coverage at U.S. Bank refers to how we will handle the transactions. If a transaction takes your account’s available balance below zero, we look to your standard overdraft coverage selections to decide how we will handle the transaction. U.S. Bank may authorize and pay overdrafts for these types of transactions for a fee:

  • Checks and other transactions using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments
  • Recurring debit card transactions (such as automatic gym dues)

We will not authorize and pay overdrafts for these types of transactions unless you say "yes" to ATM and debit card overdraft coverage:

  • ATM transactions
  • Debit card purchases (e.g., paying for gas at the pump, buying groceries, buying something online)

2 Minutes to Waive Your US Bank Overdraft Fee

When your bank transaction resulted in a negative balance in your bank account, you have an overdraft. US Bank is one of the most common personal banking designed for online users. It has basic bank account including checking account, saving account and credit card, while it also provide loans and credit lines. In some cases, US Bank will still authorize your transaction and this situation is called insufficient funds transaction. Most banks will charge an overdraft fee when this situation happens.

How much is the overdraft fee?

Based on US Bank standards, US bank will still authorize and pay overdrafts for three types of transactions:

Checks and other transactions using your checking account number.
Automatic bill payments.

However, US bank will not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following two types of transactions unless you tell the bank to do so:

ATM transactions.

Call the US bank customer service:
